During my career, I have worked on the investor, contractor and design side, so I have a comprehensive overview of the whole construction process. In my experience, the ability to design with predictable costs and timeframes is key for all players, whether they are clients, contractors or design offices.
This is a particular challenge for small and medium sized architectural firms, as unlike larger firms, there is rarely a dedicated BIM manager position available. The reason is that there are not enough parallel projects to justify a full-time specialist. In the SME sector, BIM has typically been used on a case-by-case, project-based basis, often without a clear understanding of the business and design benefits that a well-constructed digital system can bring.
